classroom management

A “snapshot” of how I effectively manage my classroom

Goals:
  • Students will feel safe and welcomed in the classroom.
  • Students will be engaged in their own learning through the use of a wide variety of hands-on, meaningful and authentic activities in a student-centered environment.
  • All students will have the opportunity to grow in knowledge, understanding and engagement in their local and global world.
  • Students will know that I am a trustworthy and caring individual that they may turn to in a time of need.

The following are four areas that I emphasize in managing my classroom:

Organization – I believe that a well-organized classroom is imperative to the success of an effective classroom management plan.  In order to create a well-organized classroom, I will:

  • Create a set of routines and procedures for students to follow beginning on the very first day of school.
  • Come to school equipped to help students learn through having thoroughly prepared each day’s lesson.

§  Have a well-organized and accessible classroom so anyone entering the room will gain a clear understanding of the expectations of respect for classroom materials and their locations.

Prevention – There are many ways that a teacher may prevent inappropriate or undesired behavior.  I will work to prevent such behavior by:

  • Encouraging cooperation and peer-supported learning that advances students’ self-confidence and willingness to participate.
  • Incorporating a variety of teaching styles in order to engage all students in active participation throughout every lesson.
  • Developing and implementing lessons that are meaningful in the context of the students’ own lives.

Intervention – When students display undesired behavior it is necessary to intervene in a respectful and supportive manner in order to avoid further escalation of the problem behavior.  Recognizing that every student is unique and each may require a different intervention strategy, I have become familiar with and will work to incorporate a variety of intervention strategies such as:

  • Developing a strong rapport with students by greeting each student as they enter the room and talking with each student throughout the day.
  • Jim Fay’s Love and Logic

Communication – Open communication with students, parents and other faculty is an important component to helping students become successful learners.  Consequently, I will:

  • Encourage students, parents and faculty to communicate with me both in and outside the classroom through verbal or written communication.
  • Invite parents into the classroom to help or observe.
  • Create and regularly update a class website, blog and/or online art gallery.
  • Will contact parents to ask for support or share good news about their child.
