Literacy in the Arts

View the images below and read the descriptions of how literacy is promoted and utilized in the art room.

For this assignment, students used words from magazines and newspapers to create collages that represented them or a specific event throughout history.

Students enjoyed creating vocabulary posters to display in the room that include words, definitions and images that can be used as a reference while writing or talking about art.

Middle School students had the opportunity to support students in the elementary school by designing March is Reading Month shirts. The shirts are given to elementary students as part of a month-long program to promote reading. This design, created by a 7th grade student, was selected for the shirts in 2014.

This artwork is created using only words. Students had to research a person that they considered to be a legend or hero and create an image of that individual using words that described something about the person or their life.
Picture
Students learn to use their words effectively to communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas through critiques. Students do both oral and written critiques in art class and are often asked to write about an artwork that they have viewed.

Middle school students created new book covers for a chapter book of their choice. They also wrote a new description for the back of the book and shared their designs and writings with the class.

Students are often required to write artist statements to accompany their work. This sixth grade student used her artist statement to explain that she used line and color to show movement in her nonobjective artwork entitled "Rainbow Madness."

As we introduce new vocabulary in class, students add words to the word wall. Students can use the word wall as a reference while writing artist statements, doing critiques or writing project proposals.

In Art Club, students used their skills to create boxes for the "Read Early, Read Often" program. Students created boxes with characters and scenes from various children's books. The boxes were filled with books and placed in various locations in the community, encouraging families to take a book home to read.

Students were proud to display their comic strips on the bulletin board! In order to create this project, students had to begin by writing a story. Then, they analyzed their story to determine what parts of the story could be drawn and what parts needed to written out. After creating a rough draft, they shared their comic strip with other students to determine which parts of the story were clearly understood and which parts needed to be clarified. At last, they were able to create their final comic strips!

After reviewing the elements of design, high school students created these books to share with elementary and middle school students. The younger students use these books in art class when they are learning about a new element of design.

New projects are continuously being added to this page.  Check back often for more ways that literacy is used and promoted in the art room.
