Mathematics in Art

Mathematics in Art

Whether it be enlarging an image or drawing in perspective, math is often used in the creation of artistic works.  View the images below and read the descriptions of how math is promoted and utilized in the art room.

Students use math while creating drawings in perspective. The student in the picture above is working on a drawing of buildings in two-point perspective.

This student is using math to enlarge an image. Students will often use grids to increase or decrease the size of an image that they are drawing. In order to do this, they need to measure and draw a grid on both the original picture and the paper that they are drawing the image on. This requires them to calculate the correct size for each square in order to obtain the proper scale and number of boxes. Then, they use the grids like a map to create the image.

Students learn about proportions when they learn to draw the human figure. They learn the proper placement of facial features and body parts based on proportions.
